But, first of all, do you know why is Black Friday celebrated every year on the last Friday of November? This shopping tradition did not start as an advertising gimmick at all. It has, nevertheless, a much more curious origin.

The origin of Black Friday
According to The Telegraph, this day (which sometimes extends to a week) of discounts and offers has its origins in Philadelphia. In 1961, on the Saturday of Thanksgiving week (celebrated on the last Thursday of November), a football game between the army and navy was to be held in the city. On that Friday, with a flood of people arriving to do their Christmas shopping and to attend the game the following day, the city collapsed. Traffic and crowds were so chaotic that police dubbed the day “Black Friday”, the worst working day of the year for them.
Others believe that the day is called Black Friday because shopkeepers stopped being “in the red” thanks to the sales they made on that day. Thus began a tradition, although at first retailers were not happy with this designation of Black and tried to change it to Big Friday or Green Friday, without any success.
Black Friday soon took on a positive connotation, with retailers increasing their sales and consumers getting goods (especially items for Christmas presents) at very competitive prices.

Black Friday around the world
In the 21st century, Black Friday has established itself as a key date for consumption and commerce, both physical and online. It is a new tradition that reflects globalization and the influence of American culture on the rest of the world. It also shows the power of new technologies and social networks, which facilitate the dissemination and access to offers, as well as the comparison of prices and the search for information. In addition, Black Friday is a stimulus for the economy and employment, as it generates an increase in demand and supply, as well as the hiring of temporary staff.
Black Friday is celebrated in more than 50 countries. The United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Australia, Japan, India and South Africa, among others.
Each country has its own particularities and customs. But in general it is a day when discounts of up to 70% are offered on all kinds of products and services. The highlights are electronics, fashion, beauty, toys, books, travel, leisure, etc.
