The origin of Black Friday
According to The Telegraph, Black Friday is a day of discounts and offers that is celebrated every year on the last Friday of November (sometimes it lasts a week). Its origins are in the city of Philadelphia. In 1961, on the Saturday of Thanksgiving week (celebrated on the last Thursday of November), a football game between the army and navy was to be held in the city. On that Friday, with a flood of people arriving to do their Christmas shopping and to attend the game the following day, the city collapsed. Traffic and crowds were so chaotic that police dubbed the day “Black Friday”, the worst working day of the year for them.
Others believe that the day is called Black Friday because shopkeepers stopped being “in the red” thanks to the sales they made on that day. Thus a tradition began, which involves retailers increasing their sales and consumers getting goods (especially items for Christmas presents) at very competitive prices.
