Thomson & Scott – Noughty standsout in a tasting
The prestigious British website specialized in wines jancisrobinson.com featured “Noughty” from Thomson & Scott as “Wine of the Week”. In the article Tamlyn Currin explains her experience when tasting this alcohol-free sparkling wine, organic, vegan and made 100% from Chardonnay grapes. Tamlyn says she has tried “some pretty awful alcohol-free wines” and that her “expectations were pretty low”.
The Tasting
The tasting didn’t start great since the wine “didn’t smell brilliant, to be blunt” but, when she tried it, she changed her opinion… “to my great surprise, it actually tasted good! Dry with decent, crunchy, ripe-apple fruit. It was very frothy when poured, but the bubbles were fine and lively and it wasn’t uncomfortable frothy in the mouth”.
She goes on saying that she “would happily drink this if she was the designated driver or taking a break from alcohol”. Her conclusion is clear:
“It is, hands down, the best alcohol-free sparkling wine I have ever tasted, and one of the best alcohol-free wines I’ve tasted overall.”
Afterwards she gives some technical information such as “it is made from 100% Chardonnay grown on sandy and calcareous vineyards located in southern Spain, it’s fermented in stainless-steel tanks and then de-alcoholised by vacuum distillation. The wine is then lightly carbonated. Alcohol is 0.05%, residual sugar is 2.9 g/l, and calories are 14 per 100 ml. Certified organic, vegan and halal.
(…)
As for the nose, I was told that ‘the process of vacuum distillation to remove the alcohol also takes away some of the aromatic compounds. When this technique is used, there’s an option to add artificial aromas afterwards, but we decided against this because we are opposed to the use of adjuncts and flavourings.’ I can live with that.”
The article ends with a list of places around the world where you can buy this great sparkling wine and we are glad that The Blue Dolphin Store is mentioned.
We are delighted that a website specialized in “real wine” has such a positive opinion of Noughty and that it has been featured as wine of the week. Congratulations, Thomson & Scott.
