Changing socializing habits

To conduct the study entitled “The Non-Alcoholic Beverage Market. Influence of the Afternoon Drink on New Drinking Habits,” EAE surveyed more than 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 73.

According to the data, one in eight Spaniards regularly consumes non-alcoholic and/or low-alcohol drinks, with a frequency of between three and six times a week. The reasons are varied: health care, awareness of the effects of alcohol, and changes in leisure habits.

The study highlights that the growth in non-alcoholic beverage consumption is linked to a change in the way we socialize. Young people (under 44 years old) especially prefer to socialize during the day rather than at night, for example, in the afternoon, brunch, and after work. And it is during this time that more than 55% of respondents admit to drinking NoLo (low- and no-alcohol) beverages. Therefore, the evening meetups are changing the relationship with alcohol and is giving way to alcohol-free alternatives.

This is consistent with previous studies showing that Generation Z consumes less alcohol than previous generations.

Reasons for consuming alcohol-free drinks

The study indicates that the main reasons for consuming these types of drinks are:

  • 56% for health.
  • 55% for responsibility while driving or working.
  • 39% to moderate alcohol consumption at social events.

Half of those surveyed say they alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Consumers are increasingly aware of the benefits of these beverages. In fact, flavor perception has improved thanks to innovation and the creation of tastier, higher-quality options. However, price can be an obstacle for some consumers. A third of respondents consider prices to be higher than those of alcoholic versions.
