Christmas is the time to sit down and enjoy all kinds of delicacies with family and friends. Alcohol is often present at these celebrations but if this year you don’t want to drink alcohol, you may be wondering, how do non-alcoholic wines pair? The pairing with non-alcoholic wines is as interesting and complex as that of traditional wines.
Non-alcoholic wines are perfect for enjoying Christmas menus with all the flavour, they certainly give you a better experience than water or soft drinks. At the alcohol-free drinks shop The Blue Dolphin Store we recommend the non-alcoholic wines that pair best with Christmas dishes.
Pairing non-alcoholic wines by type of food
Appetizers
Christmas meals start with great appetizers, dishes with a wide variety of ingredients: cheese, cold meats, sausages or smoked fish. Smoked foods go very well with non-alcoholic sparkling wines, such as Prosecco, like Oddbird Spumante, made from 100% glera grapes from the Italian province of Treviso.
When serving cheese, it is best to offer non-alcoholic white wine or a smooth alcohol-free rosé wine. For Iberian cured meats, always a light non-alcoholic red wine, such as Pierre Zéro Signature, made with Garnacha grapes, a wine without organic alcohol; and no added sugars, preservatives or sulfites.
Seafood and fish
Seafood is the star of many Christmas tables. It goes very well with a fresh, light non-alcoholic white wine that helps to cleanse the palate. We recommend Disfrutand0,0, a non-alcoholic white wine made from 100% Verdejo grapes.
This same wine will also work wonderfully with most white fish, but if we are thinking of slightly more oily and grilled fish, such as Marieta Sin, the first non-alcoholic Albariño wine.
Poultry and white meats
The same full-bodied white wine is also perfect for poultry such as turkey, capon or pork. Its low-fat content and non-invasive aroma do not go well with a strong red wine. If serving duck, a light and fruity red wine such as Oddbird Low Intervention Organic, a 100% organic non-alcoholic red wine, a smooth blend of Merlot and Pinot Noir grapes, is best.
Red meat
For many families, the main course is still baked lamb or kid. In these cases, an alcohol-free red wine is required: perhaps a Merlot like Moderato made from 100% French grapes and has body and intensity. The same wines are recommended for game or beef.
