Non-alcoholic wine is a good option when you want to lose weight or reduce the calories you consume. Why? Very simply, alcohol-free wine has two to three times fewer calories than traditional wine. In this article, we’ll tell you why non-alcoholic wine doesn’t make you fat.

In our alcohol-free drinks shop, The Blue Dolphin store, we always provide nutritional information so you can buy the non-alcoholic wines that best suit your needs.

Why alcohol-free wine doesn’t make you fat

In other articles, we answered the question of whether non-alcoholic beer makes you fat. Now we move on to dealcoholized wines. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), regular wine typically has between 70 and 85 kilocalories per 100 ml. In comparison, dealcoholized wine has between 20 and 30 kilocalories. Therefore, non-alcoholic wine has between two and three times fewer calories than traditional wine, and therefore isn’t fattening.

But there’s more: since it doesn’t contain alcohol, it prevents fat accumulation, such as abdominal fat, and reduces the risk of diseases such as stroke and hypertension. On the other hand, alcohol-free wine is very healthy because it contains all the polyphenols.

What you need to keep in mind is that no beverage is healthier than water. Some non-alcoholic wines have a small percentage of sugar, so if you’re trying to reduce your sugar intake, you should check the label.

What do empty calories in alcohol mean?

The source of calories in dealcoholized wines is the residual sugar left behind, not the alcohol. You’ve probably heard that alcohol contains “empty calories,” but what does that really mean? The calories in alcohol are called empty calories because they have no nutritional value. They don’t contribute in any way to the proper functioning of the body.

In fact, empty calories negatively affect the body. For one thing, the body tends to use them first, leaving excess calories from other foods to be stored as fat instead of being burned.

Our bodies aren’t designed to store alcohol the way they store energy from other nutritious foods, like protein, for example. Therefore, when you drink alcohol, your body’s goal is to eliminate it, and this slows down fat metabolism.

Which non-alcoholic wine should you choose?

As with traditional wines, alcohol-free white wines are lighter and generally lower in calories than reds. Among the most popular grape varieties are Chardonnay, Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. Regarding non-alcoholic red wines, grapes like Merlot, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon are very popular.

Non-alcoholic rosé wines have a fruitier profile and are very fresh. For evenings and celebrations, alcohol-free sparkling wines are perfect because the bubbles help give a full mouthfeel. You won’t even notice they’re alcohol-free. We have both non-alcoholic white sparkling wines, such as cava and Blanc de Blancs, as well as non-alcoholic rosé sparkling wines with more intense and fruitier notes.
